As the name suggests, this food is ready to eat once you open it. Recently though, MREs come with the option of heating before consuming it.
Freeze Dried Survival food
Freeze-dried food has a different consumption process altogether. They are also widely known as dehydrated food. This means that consume it, all you have to do is rehydrate it. As with all rehydration, you will need water to do so and often even heat. How this works is; usually, you’ll have to add boiling water to the meal. The heat from the water cooks the meal in a few minutes. Typically, for this kind of survival foods, you will only need a heating source, clean water, and a few necessary utensils.
Pros And Cons Of MREs And Freeze-Dried Food
One of the essential advantages of these survival foods is that you use it only when you’re in an actual emergency. When you have limited energy resources, you use these survival foods. They are easy to prepare and consume. In the case of MREs, the additional advantage is that it requires no cook time. When you compare this with the freeze-dried food, they are blander in taste. But in a situation where you have no alternative means, MREs are lifesavers.
In the case of freeze-dried food, a problem arises if you don’t have access to a heating source and clean water. In terms of shelf life, freeze-dried food has a longer shelf life. While MREs remain edible for at least 3-5 years, they need to be stored only in ideal conditions. If they are in conditions which are too hot or humid, or wet or cold, it affects them. On the other hand, when it comes to freeze-dried foods, this survival food survives. These survival foods have a shelf life that spans decades. They remain mostly unaffected by external conditions and survive.
