There are five basic survival needs that you should meet if you want to stay alive longer during emergency situations. Obviously, there are still plenty of other needs that you’ll have to think about but if you want to sustain your body physically, you’ll need the following basic needs.
Oxygen is the most basic need of all. Without it, we won’t be able to survive. But even though it is the most basic of needs, most people overlook it.
In case you don’t know, an average adult can die without oxygen for 3-5 minutes. That’s how long you’ll be able to last without oxygen.
A shelter is critical to any kind of survival situation. Therefore, it is one of the most important basic needs. There are numerous stories of people who have been stranded without learning how to create a shelter. As a result, they end up losing their lives because they were not able to cope with the extreme temperatures out there.
Without a survival shelter, an average person can only last for up to 3 hours in extreme weather conditions. This is because the human body is not designed to withstand exposure from extreme weather temperatures such as heat, cold, or rain.
The next basic survival need is water. About 78% of our human body is made up of water. Water is needed by our body to keep it functioning and to get rid of waste and toxins. It also helps in balancing the body temperature and food digestion.
An average person can only last 3 days without water. This is why doctors have been advising everyone to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. This is to keep your body moisturized and to help prevent health issues that lack of water can cause to your body.
Food is without a doubt an important need for your survival. But did you know that you can survive for up to three weeks without eating any kind of food?
You may be physically alive for up to three weeks without eating food but it doesn’t mean that it will function properly. Food is needed by our body to keep it going. It gives our body nutrients and energy so you’ll be able to keep going during emergency situations.
Malnutrition is pretty common during emergency situations and is also one of the number one causes of death during these times. Simply having food to feed your mouth is not enough. You also need to make sure that you are eating the right kinds of food, especially during survival situations.
Getting enough rest or sleep is also necessary during survival situations. However, this basic survival need is often overlooked by most people. Lack of rest or sleep can cause your body to not function well.
It’s pretty common for people who are in survival situations to lack rest or sleep. They have this urgency to keep on moving without realizing that they are no longer giving their body the time to rest. Keep in mind that having enough sleep or rest is as important as drinking water or eating food. Without it, you won’t be able to think clearly on how to keep yourself and your family safe from harm amidst the chaos of a survival situation.
There are still plenty of other needs that you must consider and prepare for. But the five that we discussed above comes first as they are the things that’ll keep you going and survive. Obviously, you also need to prepare some sort of self-defense or establish some security measures so you won’t get killed by others amidst the chaos. But if you are creating a survival plan, be sure to include these 5 basic needs.
