For those who do not know, a tropical cyclone is a type of weather phenomenon characterized by low-pressure wind system and forms over huge bodies of water. When a storm reaches sustained winds of 74 mph, it is now called as a hurricane, a typhoon, or a cyclone depending on the region.
These storms usually form over tropical oceans before it makes landfall. Once a tropical cyclone makes landfall, its effects can be so devastating. It is capable of destroying billions of infrastructure and leave thousands of people dead and homeless. The effects of a tropical cyclone can also cause economic difficulties on areas affected.
Below is a short list of the countries that are affected the most by tropical cyclones on a yearly basis.
First off on the list is China. The country sees more tropical cyclones than any other country in the world. This is because the country’s typhoon season is all-year round. So far, the strongest tropical cyclone to hit China was Typhoon Rammasun of 2014. The typhoon made landfall on the southern region of China with wind speeds of up to 160 mph.
Over 127 typhoons have made landfall on mainland China ever since 1970. These tropical cyclones have caused significant damage to China’s economy.
The United States’ hurricane season which lasts from June to November, makes it the second most vulnerable country to tropical cyclones in the world. The strongest tropical cyclone to make landfall on the continental US was the so-called “Labor Day Hurricane” of 1935. The hurricane made landfall on the state of Florida with winds speeds of up to 185 mph.
Over 63 hurricanes have made landfall on the country since 1970. Luckily, the economy of the country is so strong that no hurricane was able to threaten it. The country quickly rises and moves on after a super strong hurricane.
Tropical Cyclones in Cuba
Cuba has the same hurricane season as the United States. But unlike the United States, the economy of Cuba struggles to recover every time it is hit by a tropical cyclone. The strongest tropical cyclone to make landfall on the country so far was the “Cuba Hurricane” of 1924. The Cuba Hurricane has winds that reached over 165 mph when it made landfall.
Since 1970, over 79 hurricanes have managed to affect Cuba and up until today, the country is still recovering from them.
Working To Minimize The Damage Of Tropical Cyclones
Even though our technology has progressed over the years, we are still not able to stop tropical cyclones. Our progress in technology has allowed us through to correctly predict tropical cyclone. We now have experts who are studying weather patterns of a tropical cyclone. We are now able to predict them before they even start to develop. This allows governments to make preparations and order evacuations on regions that are on the path of tropical cyclones.
Aside from predicting weather patterns, meteorologists are now able to figure out when tropical cyclones are going to hit a certain region of the world. This allows governments to save more people from the dangers of a tropical cyclone before it makes landfall.
Because of these advancements in technology, countries that are affected the most by tropical cyclones now have the right tools to be able to deal with these intense weather phenomenon. We may not be able to stop them, but we are certainly able to foresee when and where are they going to strike. Thanks to this, we are now able to save more lives from tropical cyclones than before.
